South Africa

National Senior Certificate with admission to diploma or SAQA verification, with Art or Design or Higher Certificate in related field. Competent in English at NQF level 4.

Special admissions

We offer mature age exemption to Degrees, Diplomas and Higher Certificates as per USAF requirements. Inscape Education Group will consider Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) based on informal or non-formal learning for admission to this course.

International students

For admission to Higher Certificate: South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluation of National Senior Certificate NQF4 equivalence. For admissions to Bachelor’s Degree: Higher Education South Africa (USAF) complete or conditional exemption certificate. A study permit in the name of Inscape Education Group is valid for the duration of the chosen course.

1st year

The Diploma in Interior Design focuses on developing practical interior design skills and ability through the introduction to four main subject categories namely: 

FUNDAMENTAL – CREATIVITY SUBJECTS 

Interior Application through practising design processes with the emphasis on problem definition, research, and conceptualisation. Developing visual awareness, aesthetics and presentation skills, especially focusing on the design elements and principles, design process and influences and design thinking. Interior Portfolio displays a significant exercise which demonstrates capability and competence through a collection of selected practical projects from all subjects for the 1st year. 

FUNDAMENTAL – KNOWLEDGE SUBJECTS 

Technical Drawing focuses on developing a practical and basic overview of an interior designer and draughtsman within the built environment through a fundamental understanding of technical skills, knowledge and terminology required by the interior design industry. Materials and Manufacturing introduce basic construction methods, a knowledge of the theory of materials, including their properties, and the manufacturing process of the products. Interior Influences I explores the history and methodology of the history of design and architecture with specific emphasis on factors influencing design and art at any specific time during the timeline pre 20th century. 

FUNDAMENTAL – SKILLS SUBJECTS 

Design Drawing I examines and practices basic elements of image making, pictorial systems, as well as expressive and conceptual drawing. Skills Application I covers different styles of writing, research methods and basic principles of writing a research proposal. Interior Computer Applications I develops computer and basic internet skills and introduces software such as AutoCAD & Photoshop. 

FUNDAMENTAL – VALUES SUBJECTS 

Leadership Programme focuses on introducing students to the foundations of great leadership which focuses on 3 components of Emotional Intelligence namely: Interpersonal skills and Stress/Time Management. 

2nd year

The Diploma in Interior Design year 2 focuses on further developing and applying practical interior design skills and ability focused on in year 01 through the continuation of 3 main subject categories namely: 

FUNDAMENTAL – CREATIVITY SUBJECTS 

Interior Computer Applications II further develops and continues to exercise computer skills for the built environment through software such as AutoCAD, Photoshop, Revit and 3Ds Max. Business Practice develops a deeper understanding of the guidelines and principles involved in running a design business. Promoting business vision, mission and values gives diploma students the confidence and ‘know-how’ to start their own design initiatives based on a foundational knowledge of strategic development, marketing strategies, importance of branding and managing finances. 

FUNDAMENTAL – KNOWLEDGE SUBJECTS 

Building Technology focuses on developing a practical and sound overview of methods of construction and technical services. Technical Drawing continues to focus on producing schedules and full working drawings of the various briefs delivered. Interior Influences II explores the history and methodology of history of design and architecture with specific emphasis on factors influencing design and art at any specific time during the timeline post 20th century. Business Practice covers a foundational introduction to project management processes as well as law and contract management. 

FUNDAMENTAL – SKILLS SUBJECTS 

Skills Application II focuses on basic photographic skills and presentation skills. Interior Computer Applications II develops and continues to exercise computer skills through software such as AutoCAD, Photoshop, and Revit. 

3rd year

 The Diploma in Interior Design 03 is centred around enhancing and directing practical interior design skills and ability developed in year 1 and 2 through the continuation of 3 main subject categories namely: 

FUNDAMENTAL – CREATIVITY SUBJECTS 

Interior Applications III establishes further practical application abilities in service and hospitality design. Interior Portfolio and competition work displays a significant exercise which demonstrates capability and competence through a collection of the best selected practical projects from all practical subjects for the duration of the Interior Design Diploma and makes room for exploring interior design competitions and presenting them in the portfolio. 

FUNDAMENTAL – KNOWLEDGE SUBJECTS 

Technical Drawing III focuses on the application of technology skills in service and retail design. Commercial and retail Design practises skills in market analysis and branding through design for the end-user. Business Practice develops a further understanding of the guidelines and principles involved in running a design business. Promoting business vision, mission and values gives diploma students the confidence and ‘know-how’ to start their own design initiatives based on a foundational knowledge of strategic development, marketing strategies, importance of branding and managing finances.

Articulation Options

Students who have graduated with the Diploma may apply to register for an Advanced Diploma in a related field.
