Furniture design and manufacturing is a specialist field that has been developed over centuries. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the possibilities within this craft industry and to develop the students' awareness of all aspects of chair design from design to production to the development of prototypes.
This course will guide you through the design process as you design a chair. Whilst furniture design is not limited to chairs, we have used a chair in this course as a point of teaching. You will touch on scale, working with templates and quarter scale models of your chair design. You will be required to sketch and create mood boards or sample boards that represent your chair design 'look and feel'. This course is aimed at all designers and creatives, even non-creatives interested in designing simple easily produced custom furniture. Exposure to design, drawing for design, technical drawing especially CAD will be an advantage but is not a requirement. By the time this course is complete you will be able to present your design journey and accompanying final design through sketching, drawings, models and if you are up to the challenge prototypes and or a full-scale model.
